Five Ways to Avoid Wire Fraud

Real estate closings are a common target for wire fraud schemes. A few simple habits can protect your funds during escrow.

Verify Wiring Instructions by Phone Always call your escrow or title officer directly — using a phone number you already know is correct, not one from a new or unexpected email — before wiring any funds.
Be Suspicious of Last-Minute Changes Wiring instructions should not change during a transaction. A last-minute email asking you to send funds to a “new” account is a major red flag.
Confirm Before You Click Scammers often spoof email addresses that look nearly identical to a real one. Check the sender’s full address carefully before opening attachments or clicking links.
Never Wire Funds Based on Email Alone A legitimate escrow or title company will never ask you to change wiring instructions by email without a verbal confirmation first.
Report Suspected Fraud Immediately If you believe you’ve been targeted, time matters. Contact your bank right away, then call your title or escrow officer directly.
